Mental health and mental health awareness is extremely important.

Mental health:

• affects how we think, feel and act,
• influences our ability to handle stress, relate to others, and make choices,
• impacts our work, relationships and physical health and
• enables us to cope with life's stresses, realize our abilities and contribute to our community

According to a recent study, nearly 6% of adults (18-64 years) in Newaygo County do not have health insurance of any kind. This is amongst the highest ratings in all of Michigan. 

According to this same study, nearly 4% of children (birth-18 years) also do not have health insurance of any kind. Nearly 55% of children who do have insurance in Newaygo County carry Medicaid (which pays roughly 50% less than a commercial insurance).   

Newaygo County also ranks amongst the highest in the state of Michigan for adults who have ever been diagnosed with depression (nearly 26%) which has been on the rise since 2020. Between 2018 and 2022, over 18% of deaths in Newaygo County were due to suicide (this is higher than the average for all of Michigan). 

In 2024, Harmonized Healing Counseling Services Inc. served roughly 90 clients (with one full time clinician and 2 part time clinicians). These 90+ clients had over 1200 counseling sessions. Many of our clients are unable to receive services elsewhere due to type of insuracne they carry or the type of services they seek (i.e. counseling for depression, anxiety, couples, marriage, family, etc.). 

We may be small but we are MIGHTY!

Because we choose to not receive federal or state funding, we have more flexibility on who may become a client. Another positive to not receiving federal or state funding is that our clinicians are not bogged down with the paperwork this type of funding recquires. This allows our clinicians to have more time with each client to assist in walking down the path to healing. 

However, there are draw backs to not receiving this funding and choosing to accept ALL forms of insurance. The largest drawback would be available funding to put back into our programming and to cover overhead costs. In 2024, the overhead costs (i.e. rent, electricity, gas for heat, payroll, etc.) was nearly $120,000. These costs are tough to cover with insurance reimbursments when over 85% of our clientele carry Medicaid.
